SEO guide for business owners

How to audit AI-generated content before it reaches customers

The short answer

An AI-content audit should answer whether the page is accurate, useful and fit to publish. A detector score cannot establish those things. Review the claims, sources, reader task and overlap with existing pages, then decide what needs research, editing or removal.

Choose a sample by risk as well as traffic

Include pages with factual claims, product advice, money or health implications, important service promises and substantial overlap with other articles. Add a representative ordinary article so the review does not focus only on exceptional cases.

Separate unpublished drafts from live content. A wrong statement already reaching customers may need immediate correction; an incomplete draft can wait for research. Record the model-assisted workflow and the human reviewer where known, but do not infer authorship from how a sentence sounds.

For deciding which existing URLs deserve work first, use the broader content audit. This review goes deeper into the draft's evidence and editorial readiness.

Open the sources and check the exact claim

Highlight factual statements, numbers, dates, comparisons and assertions about a product or policy. For each important claim, open the original source and check whether it supports that wording, population, time period and conclusion. A real citation can still be attached to the wrong claim.

Mark unsupported or outdated statements for correction. Do not replace a missing source with another AI answer. For health, legal or similarly consequential advice, identify the qualified reviewer needed and keep the draft from publication until the necessary review is complete.

Keep client records and personal data out of public prompts and examples. Use approved, minimized material for the task.

Show the revision, not only a quality score

This fictional draft excerpt demonstrates how the reviewer changes both the claim and the usefulness of the answer.

Look for the answer the generic draft missed

Read relevant competing pages for the target market. Note the strongest explanation, the missing decision and the evidence your business can genuinely add. A useful contribution might be an annotated example, a decision rule with exceptions or a practical comparison—not necessarily a new statistic.

Compare the draft with your own content as well. If it repeats an existing article with different nouns, revise the purpose or incorporate the useful material into the existing page. Do not create another URL merely because a keyword tool suggests a variation.

Then edit the language: remove repeated setup paragraphs, inflated claims and mechanical transitions. Keep technical terms where they help, explain them at the point of use and let sentence length follow the thought.

Give every draft a clear editorial status

Use a short decision: publish after checks, revise with a named research task, hold for expert review, or combine with an existing page. Record the reason, owner and unresolved question. Review the final rendered page, citations, links and mobile layout before release.

Google's AI-content guidance recognizes useful assistance while warning about scaled low-value production. The issue is not a magic “human” percentage. Your process should produce an answer worth publishing, with someone responsible for it.

I can help establish that process through research and content improvement, using your approved sources and a review standard suited to the subject.

Verify your AI content decisions

  • Inventory live URLs with their purpose, index status, search queries, inquiries, internal links, and overlap with other pages.
  • Open cited sources and verify that they support the claims; assign a qualified reviewer to consequential technical, safety, health, or financial advice.
  • Record a keep, improve, merge, or remove decision per URL, with editorial ownership and any developer work for redirects or indexing.

AI-generated content audit FAQs

Will Google penalize my site for using AI-written content?

Using AI is not, by itself, a reason for a penalty. The risk is publishing content at scale to manipulate rankings without adding useful value, whether people or tools produce it. An audit should examine accuracy, search intent, original business knowledge, and usefulness rather than treating the writing method as the verdict.

Should we delete every AI-written page that gets little traffic?

Review purpose, factual quality, conversions, relevant links, and overlap before deleting. Improve pages with a clear role, merge genuinely overlapping content into an appropriate destination, and remove obsolete material. Use a redirect only when there is a relevant replacement; otherwise, a 404 or 410 may be appropriate. Do not redirect everything to the homepage.

Can an AI detector replace a manual content audit?

No. A detection score does not establish factual accuracy, useful originality, or reliable authorship. Open the cited sources, test instructions, and compare pages targeting the same need. The handoff should assign an action to each URL and distinguish the work for an editor, a subject-matter reviewer, and a developer.
