Start with the product’s actual status
In Merchant Center, review the affected product, destination, country and issue details. Separate account-wide restrictions from a product-level problem. Save the issue wording and observation time before changing anything.
Three situations need different work: a rejected item needs the named issue investigated; a pending item needs its processing state understood; an eligible item with low exposure needs a relevance and performance review. “Not showing” alone is not a diagnosis.
Google's free listings guidance concerns product offers. A homepage or category page is not a substitute for the specific product landing page in a product submission.
Find which system owns each field
A store connector, spreadsheet, feed platform or supplemental source may be supplying the data. Find the source of truth before editing a field that the next sync will overwrite. Record the product ID, URL, source and refresh timing.
Compare price, currency, availability, variant, shipping information and product identifiers with the live page and checkout. Use genuine identifiers when required and available; do not invent a GTIN to clear a warning. Requirements can vary by country, product and listing method.
For a US store, inspect the applicable shipping settings. For a Turkish store, check the current requirements for Turkey rather than copying a US setup. Returns and business contact information should be clear and match what the business actually offers.
Use a field-by-field reconciliation sheet
This sample separates the issue from the person who can actually fix it. It is not an account approval checklist.
Correct the source, then verify the result
If stock differs, inspect the update timing before changing product copy. If the wrong variant opens, test the submitted landing URL. If the account has a policy issue, read the specific requirement and review the business information; adding keywords will not resolve it.
Google's mismatch guidance makes the timing of the observation important. Keep the original diagnostic evidence so you can distinguish a fixed issue from one you simply cannot reproduce now.
For discontinued items, use a deliberate out-of-stock product policy. A feed change and a URL redirect are different actions and should not be bundled blindly.
Measure listings separately from organic landing-page performance
Record free-listing performance using the relevant report and date range. Do not label all Google traffic as free-listing traffic or assume product approval improves ordinary search rankings. Where sales attribution is available, distinguish product clicks from completed purchases.
The next improvement may be product information rather than account setup: a descriptive title, accurate images, useful specifications and a buying page that answers the shopper's question. See product page SEO for that work. I can review the page and data dependencies through e-commerce SEO support; specialist feed implementation and paid campaigns need their own scope.
Check your free-listings setup
- Compare each sampled feed item with its landing page and selected variant: URL, price, currency, availability, and checkout conditions.
- Check account-level issues and item-level eligibility specifically for free listings, including the intended target country.
- Reconcile shipping, returns, and business information with the website and the requirements for your target country.
Questions about Google free listings
Do I need to run Shopping ads to use Google's free product listings?
No. Free listings use Merchant Center product data without requiring a Shopping ad campaign. You still need a verified and claimed store website, eligible product data, and the required business, shipping, and returns information. Review free-listings eligibility separately from paid Shopping campaign status.
Why are my products approved but not appearing in free listings?
Check each item's free-listings eligibility, target country, shipping coverage, and landing-page accessibility first. Then review free-listings impressions in Merchant Center. If the item is eligible but has little exposure, investigate product titles, identifiers, category accuracy, and demand rather than repeatedly submitting unchanged data.
How can I tell whether free listings are generating sales?
Use Merchant Center's free-listings performance report alongside GA4 purchase reporting. Verify auto-tagging or consistent feed URL tracking, test purchase events, and reconcile revenue with store orders. Report free-listings sales separately only when your attribution setup can distinguish them from Shopping ads and other Google organic traffic.
